Title: | Summer Creative Writing Intern |
---|---|
ID: | 1346 |
Job Type: | Internship |
Job Classification: | Non-exempt Hourly |
Overview
Do you love kids? Are you excited by the idea of helping children learn to write short stories and plays with beginnings, middles, and (drum roll) endings? Then look no further: Writopia Lab is looking for interns for our Upper West Side and Brooklyn labs in New York City.
Since its formation in New York City in 2007, Writopia Lab has grown into a nationwide community of young writers and creative writing workshops for kids ages 6 to 18. Our mission is to foster joy, literacy, and critical thinking in children and teens from all backgrounds through creative writing. We create a safe and engaging space for writers at all stages of the writing process, and we aim to provide the creative inspiration, individual attention, and intellectual environment that may not be available to them at school.
What Interns Do
Interns serve as role models to our young writers while cultivating their love for writing and confidence. During workshop, interns provide typing, editorial, and moral support to our writers. For our full-day camp programming, interns lead electives doing everything from running literary games in the park to leading a songwriting elective for young musicians. Interns engage with and guide our writers throughout the day, in both workshops and electives.
Pay and Hours
$16.50 per hour; 20 to 30 hours per week from early June through mid August.
Requirements
- Must have received a GED or graduated from high school by June of 2024
- We are looking for candidates who find it easy to be supportive and enthusiastic about young writers' work and who can learn to be thoughtful editors and guides.
- We are looking for applicants with majors or minors--or a strong background in--English, Creative Writing, or Education.
- Availability to work in-person at our locations on the Upper West Side (Manhattan) or Park Slope (Brooklyn).
- Internships start in June and end in August, and all interns are required to commit to the end of the summer.
