Overview

Writopia Lab, an award-winning 501(C)(3) nonprofit that runs the country's best creative writing workshops for kids and teens, is looking for a Wellness Counselor for our two week Advanced Writing Seminar (AWS) at Pratt Art Institute in Brooklyn. This program runs from Sunday, July 12th through Saturday July 25th. Applicants must be available for this entire period. AWS is application-only and for rising juniors, seniors, and college freshmen.

The Program Wellness Counselor provides support and mentorship to the program participants, and acts as a collaborative resource for the program directors and staff. The person in this role interacts with participants and staff to provide a broad range of mental health and emotional support. Areas of support include coaching staff on participant behavioral issues, helping identify the needs of individual participants, helping frame difficult conversations professionally and empathetically, and promoting a preventive, supportive, and inclusive environment for all.

Program Dates

Sunday, July 12th through Saturday July 25th.

Pay

Stipend of $1500 plus meals, room, and board plus up to 6 hours of training paid at $17.00 per hour prior to the program overnight dates.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a trusted, on-site resource for up to thirty-four teenage participants and up to six staff members
  • With Directors and staff, chaperone excursions and group trips to various destinations in New York City
  • Safekeep and keep records of medications for those who have them
  • Monitor emotional well-being of participants and escalate concerns to the Directors early
  • Meet one-on-one as needed with any participants if they are experiencing social-emotional challenges or mental health issues
  • Acceptance and understanding that employment is at a sleepaway (overnight) program and that work hours are irregular. The Program Wellness Counselor must live on-site at the program location and be available to work for the entire duration of the program.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Master's degree or MSW candidate in social work, public health, creative arts therapy, psychology, or related human services field
  • Experience and passion for working with teens
  • Knowledge of Social Emotional Learning Concepts and Practice
  • Creative problem solving skills regarding interpersonal issues
  • Desire, ability, and willingness to work and live in a dorm community and to reside in overnight in a dorm
