Description
Overview
Attention all writers! Do you love kids? Are you excited by the idea of helping children learn to write short stories with beginnings, middles, and (drum roll) endings? Or does the idea of helping kids express themselves and explore their world through nonfiction and essay writing excite you even more? Writopia Lab, an award-winning 501(c)3 nonprofit that runs creative writing workshops for kids ages 7 to18, is looking for creative writing workshop instructors for our Washington, DC location in Tenleytown.

Since its formation in New York City in 2007, Writopia Lab has grown into a nationwide community of young writers. Our mission is to foster joy, literacy, and critical thinking in children and teens from all backgrounds through creative writing. We create a safe and engaging space for writers at all stages of the writing process, and we aim to provide the creative inspiration, individual attention, and intellectual environment that may not be available to them at school.

What Writing Instructors Do
Our instructors are half camp counselor (fun and funny, warm and engaging) and half savvy editor/teacher (astute, insightful, serious, open, sensitive). We train teachers extensively in our method and are looking for published fiction and non-fiction authors and/or produced playwrights.

Creative writing session instructors lead after-school and weekend workshops and one-on-one private sessions. During the school year, workshops are scheduled after school and on weekends; during the summer, longer three-hour workshops are scheduled during the day. Workshops and private sessions are a balance between fun, engaging literary games, focused writing time, and constant feedback from the instructor. Instructors harness young writers' passion and curiosity.

This part-time position will be in-person instruction at our location in Tenleytown in Washington, DC.

Requirements
We are in need of instructors who find it easy to be supportive and enthusiastic about young writers' work and who are thoughtful instructors and writers. Completed B.A., M.A., and/or publications preferred. Must be fully vaccinated.

Location
Washington, DC, Tenleytown.  May also teach some workshops online.

How to Apply
If you are excited by the idea of joining a community of writers and helping children and teens learn to strengthen their writing skills, please apply! (Don’t forget to attach your resume, cover letter, and answer the question “Why do you want to work at Writopia?”)
