Description

Are you a writer who loves working with kids? Are you excited by the idea of helping young people learn to write stories, essays, plays, and poetry? Writopia Lab is an award-winning 501(c)3 non-profit that runs the nation’s best creative writing workshops for kids and teens.

We are looking for an energetic and qualified writer to join our administrative team in Westchester and Fairfield counties, and to lead small groups of students in afterschool, weekend, and summer creative writing workshops.

Our students come from all walks of life. Some are already highly motivated, dedicated writers, while others are still struggling to find their voice. Our instructors are half camp counselor (fun and funny, warm and engaging) and half savvy editor/teacher (astute, insightful, serious, open, sensitive).

This position is:

  • Full Time, including approximately 15 hours per week of teaching and 25 hours per week of administrative and events work, including Saturdays.

  • Long-term. We work hard to build a strong community of young writers, and we need professionals who want to work for Writopia Lab!

  • In the suburbs. This position serves our labs in Westchester, Fairfield, and Rockland counties.

  • Part of a team of instructors led by the Regional Manager and Operations Manager.

The person we seek:

  • Loves to write and pursues their own personal craft as a writer.

  • Loves working with children, including kids, tweens, and teens.

  • Loves working with diverse populations from all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, and with different styles of learning.

  • Loves thinking big-picture and working on educational projects.

  • Loves working as part of a team, pitching in with the everyday operations of a vibrant, growing regional and national afterschool program.

  • Loves the opportunity to join a non-profit community of young writers and the like-minded professionals who serve them.

  • Has a dynamic and energetic personality, and has the ability to lead productive, supportive workshops and to give detailed, individualized feedback.

  • Will be trained extensively in our teaching method.

Please apply through this short form. Be sure to:

  • Tell us about your experience as a writer. Published or produced writers are preferred. MFAs (including recent grads) are great, but not necessary.

  • Tell us about your experience working with kids and teens, especially in a group setting.

  • Tell us about your administrative experience, including your comfort with Google docs, spreadsheets, and Skype. This position involves a lot of office work and team projects.
